Recently I've gotten into graphic novels, which as you guys probably know, is just the fancy name for novel-length comic books.
Here's the list of ones I've read so far:
~Age of Reptiles: Tribal Warfare by Ricardo Delgado: A pack of deinyochus, having been robbed of their kill by a T-Rex, seek revenge by destroying his (the T-rex) eggs. Furious, the T-Rex and his family strike back, thus starting a war, which can only end in the destruction of one of the families.
In the sequel (well, prequel, really, since it’s set in the Jurassic) Age of Reptiles: The Hunt, a young allosaur Santo’s mother is slaughtered by a pack of ceratosaurs. Left on his own, Santo starts his own hunt: to destroy the pack.
Although both stories are told with pictures- there are no words- the story is easy to follow and compelling; and the characters are likeable. The dinosaurs are realistic, with alone the direction of the pupil and the rise of the brow played with to convey emotions.
In addition, the artwork is very beautiful; you can see some examples of it here: www.darkhorse.com/search/search.php?sstring=Ricardo+Delgado&match=all&scope=products
The only warning is that there’s quite a bit of blood.
~Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon Based on a true story, this one follows four lions which escape from the Baghdad Zoo during the Iraq War: Zill, the male, his mate Noor, their son Ali, and Zill’s other mate, the old, half-blind Safa. Along the way, the lions face the various other animals and try to find their way back to the wild.
An examination look at freedom, the book has excellent artwork, which redeems it from its rather short, distracted plotline and dialogue (the animals all talk), in my eyes. It was good, although I didn’t care for the characters as much as I wanted to.
Amazon, unfortunately only has the cover up.
Warning: This one has a lot of blood, adult situations and language; plus an unhappy ending.
That’s all I’ve come across so far; does anyone else know of any good graphic novels?
