"All right, then," Tuke sighs, looking harassed. "Shoot, eh."
Rutt, meanwhile, is caught up in a tide of emotions, and doesn't know what to think or feel. He tries to hide behind an aloof expression, but can't quite pull it off, instead looking vaguely perplexed.

Roanoke literally swallows his pride and chokes on it.
"I am truly sorry. I-it's just- I expected you two to be like me, not some uncultured yokels. I didn't want to accept you two for who you are...
"You can hate me and leave now- I wouldn't blame you." Tears glistened from his dark eyes. "It would serve me right for what I did to you- I've lost both my mate and sons.
"Let death come, I don't care anyway," whispered Roanoke, turning away with lowered head.

The brothers listen in uncomfortable silence, neither one knowing what to say. The air seems thick with grief and shame.
"Let death come, I don't care anyway."
Rutt looks at his brother, and paws the ground. He can't resist asking. "What, is he sick?" "I dunno, eh." Tuke sighs, and steps forward. "Look, uh, Dad...I'm sorry too, eh." Rutt blinks. "Sorry? What are you sorry for?" "Well, I don't--now you stay out of this, eh, you're confusing me." "Oh. Sorry, eh." Tuke shakes his head, and for a moment he can't remember what he meant to say. "Oh, yeah," he blurts out, as it comes back to him. "So, like...we'll forgive you, Pops. Right?" Rutt seems to be studying a leaf in excruciating detail. Tuke clears his throat. "Right?" Rutt now examines a stone by his right hoof, apparently fascinated. Tuke jabs him with an antler, and he yelps. "Right, Rutt?" "Well, uh...well maybe we should, like, negotiate the definition of 'we,' eh." Tuke stares. "What?" "Well, you was just saying 'we'll' forgive him, eh." "Uh, yeah. You and me. We. We forgive him, right?" "Well, I guess you do, eh." "No, we do. Both of us." Rutt looks away. "Well, I don't." Tuke's mouth hangs open. "Y-you don't?" Rutt looks back at him. "I don't, eh."
For a moment, the whole forest seems quiet, and Tuke looks at Rutt, and Rutt looks at the leaf, and the leaf flutters in the breeze.
Finally, "Well...well, that's fine, eh. Fine and dandy. I forgive him." Rutt snorts, not taking his eyes off the leaf. "You would."

OOC: Wow you have a good hold on the moose eh? BIC: Roanoke's ears swivel forwards as the confusing scene plays out. "Thank you, Tuke. You are a better Moose than I am," he smiles, tears of gratitude in his eyes. His grief still hurting him, Roanoke stares long and hard at Rutt. "So be it," he whispers. "Tuke and I must leave to your own path then. Good-bye, my son." With that, Roanoke turns.

This gets Rutt's attention, and he looks up at Tuke, hurt.
Tuke looks back and forth between his father and his brother, speechless. Then, after a few failed attempts, he blurts, "You're leaving him?"

"Well of course," replies Roanoke. "If he hasn't forgiven me, why should he want to come with me?"

"Well, well what makes you think he wants to go with you, eh?" Rutt says, stamping a hoof.
Tuke turns to Roanoke. "He's right. I can't just go and leave him!" Rutt nods. "Yeah, listen to him, eh."
"We're brothers," Tuke continues.
"And brothers are forever," adds Rutt, nodding.
"And he needs me. Who would keep him out of trouble?"
"Yeah, who would keep me--hey, what's that s'posed to mean, eh?"
"Uh, nothing." Tuke clears his throat, looking at the sky.
"Right, okay." Rutt stares at Roanoke. "So, I guess he's not leaving." "I'm not," agrees Tuke, looking back at Roanoke.

Roanoke stands for a moment, stunned. "So be it," he says finally. "Farewell, my sons."
The clomping off of hooves rings out across the land, followed by Roanoke's scream of pain and a Dire Wolf's snarls of pleasure.

Soaked in his own blood, Roanoke recovers his hooves and faces his enemy.
Suddenly, the stag gasps in shock. Those eyes... he knows those eyes. "Pyronondo," he gasps. Lifting his head, Roanoke bellows his sons' names in a plea for salvation.

Rutt stares as Roanoke disappears through the trees. He hangs his head. "Gee, I...I didn't think he'd take it so hard." Tuke turns to leave, but for a moment Rutt doesn't follow. Finally, casting one look back, Rutt turns to join his brother. No sooner does he take a step, though, than Roanoke's cry rings out. Spooked, the two make a frantic attempt to run at the same time, and instead slam into each other, locking antlers. Panicking, Rutt tries to back away, stumbling with a jerk as his antler is caught. Tuke catches his balance and listens again. His instincts are telling him to run -- and, in fact, so is the rest of him. But then, Roanoke cries out again, distinctly calling his sons' names this time. Without thinking, Tuke manages to unhook his antler, and bolts. Rutt stands still for a moment, then charges after him, calling, "Wait! Hold up, eh, you're going the wrong way!" Tuke slides to a halt at the edge of a clearing, and Rutt barely stops beside him. The two stare in horror at the sight before them -- Roanoke, the blood -- the creature. "Oh, geeze," whispers the younger brother. OOC: I'm actually not sure just what they just saw. I'm a little confused; I thought Roanoke was attacked by a dire wolf. Is Pyronondo a shapeshifting wyvern, or is he just there at the same time?

OOC: Yeah it was a Dire Wolf- Pyronondo is a shape-shifter. BIC: The Dire Wolf turns his pitch-black head. "I didn't know you had a family, eh, Roanoke" he says in a strong Canadian accent, licking the dripping blood from his fangs. "Very strong- in fact TOO strong." The beast walks a few paces away. "Watch your back," he sneers, lopping off. The instant the Wolf disappears, Roanoke collapses, shaking violently. "Pyronondo...Pyronondo..." he repeats over and over again, the whites of his eyes glistening.

As the creature turns its head, that cold gaze keeps the brothers rooted to the spot, unable to speak or run. Neither of them hears the creature's comment to Roanoke, or much of anything, in the grip of terror.
Then the creature is gone, just like that. Tuke swallows, shaking himself out of the trancelike state. He continues staring at where the beast used to be for several moments.
"It's a wolf," cries Rutt, finally. "Run!"
Composing himself, Tuke manages to look like he was never concerned to begin with. "Trample off, eh, wolves go in packs. And he's gone, anyway."
Looking back at the spot where the creature stood, he sees Roanoke, shaking and muttering to himself. Rutt sees him at the same time, and blinks. "What's wrong with him, eh? I mean, besides the..." Rutt swallows. "The blood, and...the...blood."
As Rutt begins to sway at the sight, Tuke is already at his father's side, though feeling a little weak in the knees himself. "Are you okay? Can you stand?"

"It's Pyronondo..." continues Roanoke, eyes still wide. "He's a shape-shifer... I didn't know that... He could anywhere... Anything..."
A chimpmunk runs by, making the stag shriek with terror.

OOC: "Ever notice how chipmunks are always harbingers of danger?" BIC: Tuke flinches from the shriek, and Rutt starts and backs further away. His ears still ringing, Tuke shakes his head and takes a step closer. "Easy there, just calm down. What was you just sayin'...something about a Payroll? Pyromania?"
