I don't know if you guys heard about this or not, but on Saturday, May 3rd, the 134th Kentucky Derby was held. One of the twenty hopefuls was Eight Belles, a filly. Now, in the history of the Kentucky Derby there have been only three fillies to win: Regret, Genuine Risk and Winning Colors. I was exciting about the chance of seeing a filly win, so I looked forward to the race. Eight Belles did come in second, loosing to a colt named Big Brown. But while Big Brown's owners celebrated, it was revealed that Eight Belles had fallen right after crossing the finish line. The veterinarians rushed to the scene, only to discover that Eight Belles had broken her ankles in both forelegs to the point of cutting the skin; she could not even get up off the ground and so she was euthanized. I wasn't expecting this at all- I had been so happy to hear that a filly was running, was so impressed at how well Eight Belles ran- and now she'll never race again. You can find more information about her here: sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/triplecrown08/news/story?id=3380100May she rest in peace; she ran a good race. -EbonyPatriot

Oh wow, that's pretty sad news. Poor thing, you lose out on a contest like that and then being put to sleep like that.

Oh my.. that's terrible! I hate it when an animal has to suffer like that; especially when it's so bad that it has to be put down. So young too. Ah well, I'm relieved to hear she was put out of her misery. Poor girl. May she rest well in a better place.

Oh my, I'm really sorry to hear about that. She sounds like a good horse. This is a good way to remember her.

That sounds incrediblely painful, and a saddening story. Reading the headline, she sounded like an incredible horse, full of energy and life. She did run a good--Great race! - Little preacher man.

Wow.. that's really shocking. After she finished the race and all... that's really unfortunate. No horse should have to suffer that. I guess it's somewhat comforting to know they make it as painless as possible. Let's hope this thing is a one of it's kind. :/

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that. Just like what Striper said, I would put an animal to sleep rather than letting them suffer.

Sadly, cases like this have happened before. Barbaro, the winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, was racing in the Preakness when his right hind leg was shattered. They were able to keep the colt alive for a year and were able to mend his leg, but despite their best efforts, he became infected with laminitis in his forelegs and right hind causing him a good deal of pain; he was euthanized. Eight Belles's death is very similar to the 1975 filly Ruffian. Ruffian, a huge, undefeated three-year-old, was considered one of the greatest racers. She was in a match race with the Derby winner of that year, Foolish Pleasure when she the bones in her right foreleg snapped, with the bones piercing the skin. They tried to fix her leg, but when she came out of anathesia, she kicked so widly she broke all of the bones that been fixed and so had to be euthanized. That's so sad; such a powerful animal, yet they must be so fragile.

Yes,it truely is sad when horses die in horse racing.Personally,I really loved Barbaro.I rped him for nearly a year after his dead in honor of him,on the day to the year he died,I rped his last race and injury, and I ended it with Barbaro trotting up to heaven to never have to worry about injuries ever again.
It was just my way of saying goodbye.
And its sad on ALL horses killed/injured in horse races.
