In 2004, DC created a re-vamp of Batman called "The Batman." The episodes followed a young Bruce Wayne as he learns the robes of being Batman, with a decidedly different style. The actors were recast, with Tom Kenny as the Penguin, Kevin Michael Richardson as the Joker and Hyden Walch as Harley Quinn. In addition, Batgirl joined the bat family long before Robin # 1: Dick Grayson did.
I've only seen two episodes completely through, one of which is my favorite, with Paul Dini writing it and Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill returning to voice two of the characters: A Matter of Family.
A "Matter of Family" is Robin #1: Dick Grayson's origin episode. The son of the famous Flying Graysons, (Kevin Conroy and Grey Delise), young Dick is happy with his life- until one day, his parents are confronted by the odd-eyed Tony Zucco (Mark Hamill, replacing Thomas F. Wilson from B:TAS), the knife-thrower who catches Dick and informs them that he's there to offer the family...protection, if you will, for a fee of course. Dick's father attacks him when Zucco hurts Dick, and tells him to get out.
During the performance that night, Zucco reveals to his brothers that he has removed the bolts from the highwire, sending the Graysons tumbling to their deaths- and leaving a distraught Dick sobbing on the platform.
But luckily for Dick, Bruce Wayne had been in the audience too and offers to adopt him. It doesn't take Dick long to figure out that Wayne is really Batman- and that Batman is going after Zucco. Dick wants revenge too...
I really liked this episode. I do wish they had spent a bit more time on it- the B:TAS used a two-parter for this episode and I think this version should have too- it feels a bit rushed. ^^ But it was still very well done- I love the acting and emotion (I must admit, I had expected Conroy and Hamill to use the same voices they had in the original show, although neither does), as well as the idea for how Robin chose his name and that Zucco was a fellow circus performer, not just a gangster.
So has anyone else this episode?
