This is just a very short story I wrote for Nadine. I wrote this to help her feel better. ^^
New Life
Ontop of a mountain sat a dark-furred bear, a sow to be precise. Her head was looking up into the night sky, watching the northern lights as they swayed across the sky among the stars. The sight was beautiful, but despite this, the sow was in a depressed mood. Her ears hung low, her brown eyes downcasted. Her black and purple..yes purple, fur swayed as the wind gently blew against her.
"I passed it up..." She muttered. "Why did I get cold feet?" She picked up a stick, and threw it aside in anger. She felt completely stupid for running away like that, and right in front of Kenai too. "Maybe we just weren't meant to be."
She laid down and placed her head on her front legs. She looked much like what Kenai did the morning after he found out he killed Koda's mother. She was so beside herself that she failed to notice a new scent filling her nostrils and sound enveloping her ears. A shadow casted over her body, but she didn't flinch.
"Well well well..." She heard a voice say, and looked behind her. She could see a silhouette slowly approaching her. In the dark light it was hard to make out the details. "I'm surprised to find you up here alone Nadine." Nadine, the black and purple bear, lifted up her head, her ears cocked forward. Whoever this was, it was someone she knew. "I thought you would be with Kenai."
The figure stepped into the light, and Nadine blinked as she recognized the figure. She looked exactly like Kenai, only a lighter shade of brown, and eyes of a different shape. She was also smaller than Kenai, and slightly smaller than Nadine herself. Nadine looked away and stared out into the northen lights again. "Hello Nita." She greeted casually. Ever since Nita and Kenai decided to break up, Nita and Nadine had started to become good friends.
Nita smiled softly and walked up to Nadine. The depressed sow didn't mind at all when the cinnamon-colored bear sat down next to her and looked up at the northern lights with her. Nita admired the northern lights. They signaled the Great Spirits were at work. It was the Great Spirits who changed her into a bear and helped her escape an abusive life with Atka. Her heart still wrenched at the memory of that man. She couldn't believe she ever wanted to marry him in the first place.
Nita originally married Kenai after turning into a bear, but their marriage was complicating things. Nita felt as though she was getting in the way of Kenai's life, and Koda's life. So only a few weeks after their bear marraige, Nita talked with Kenai and told him she felt if they divorced. Kenai was upset at first, but he soon agreed to the idea, that it was for the best. He and Nita were still close friends, and Nita wanted to find another girlfriend for Kenai to help heal the pain in his heart.
Having known Nadine since she was still human, Nita had spoken to Nadine about what happened. She had encouraged Nadine yesterday to tell Kenai how she felt and hopefully get together again. She had come today to check up on her, and see if she popped the question. Nita was willing to help prepare for the wedding, and already told the bears at the Salmon Run about the possible new wedding. She and the other bears were now working hard on a surprise party for Nadine and Kenai for their wedding, if it ever happened.
After a few minutes of silence, Nita gently nudged Nadine in the arm. "So...did you ask him yet?"
The purple-furred bear only sighed and looked away. "N-No...I didn't ask him."
Nita looked shocked, but quickly frowned. "Why not?" She nudged her again. "I thought you loved him. Don't you want to be with Kenai?"
Nadine lifted up her head, and looked straight into the brown bear's eyes. "Yes! Yes I do!" She shouted.
"Then go ask him!" Nita urged her.
Nadine lowered her head. "I-I'm too afraid..." She could feel tears coming to her eyes. "I was going to...but I panicked..and I ran. I ran away from Kenai." She started shaking. "Why would he want to marry a coward like me?"
Nita's ears lowered a bit, and she sighed sympathetically. "I understand... But if you don't ask him now, someone else might. Don't blow your chance, Nadine!" She placed her paw on the mourning bear's shoulder. "If it'll make you feel better, I'll go with you to give you support. Does that sound all right?"
The black sow sniffled, and wiped her nose. She gave Nita a friendly smile. "Yeah..sure...thanks Nita." She hugged the brown sow, the same sow she was once sworn enemies with.
Nita laughed a bit and hugged Nadine back. "You're welcome." She released her. "Now let's go."
"Okay." Nadine replied.
The two sows headed down the mountain slope back towards the Salmon Run where the bears had gathered, waiting eagerly for their return. They all knew the drill, not to act suspiciously until Nita gave the word. As the female bears walked amongst the group of ursines, they finally found Kenai talking with Koda. Koda laughed heartfully. Apparently Kenai had just told him a joke.
Nadine stopped, and backed up. "I-I can't do this!"
Nita growled playfully. "Oh yes you can!" She lowered her head and pushed Nadine from behind. "Go on!" She pushed Nadine again until the black sow was walking forward on her own.
Kenai laughed at Koda. "Yeah, it was a great joke eh?"
Koda looked over. "Oh, hi, Nadine! Where did you go to?" He bounded over to her. "You just took off like something spooked you. Was it a hunter?" He was joking of course.
Nadine smiled playfully at him. "No it wasn't Koda." She gently batted him on the head in a playful manner. "And if it was, you would've chased him off because you're a..."
"Raging ball of wild fur!" Koda said proudly.
Nadine chuckled. "Yep you sure are." She looked up at Kenai sheepishly. "Uh..Kenai...could I speak with you?" When she eyed Koda's curious stare, she added, 'Without Koda around?"
Koda lowered his ears angrily. "Aw man..."
Nita walked up and gestured Koda to follow her. She gave Nadine a wink as she herded Koda way from the bears, leaving Kenai and Nadine alone. Well almost alone, there were still bears around, but they seemed to be ignoring them.
As soon as Nita and Koda were out of sight, Kenai spoke, "So..what is it that you wanted to talk to me about?" Unbenownst to him and Nadine, Nita and Koda were watching from bushes nearby.
"Well..I...I..." The black and purple sow stammered. "I wanted to know..I mean I wanted to ask you..." She gulped. How was she going to word this?
Kenai's ears perked up. "What? What did you want to ask me?"
Nadine gulped again and was now slightly shaking. She blushed, but because of their black fur, it was hard to tell. "I wanted to know if you'd like..."
"Yes...?" Kenai inquired.
"Well...you see...I..."
Nita shook her head, feeling a little angry. "Pop the question!" She whispered harshly. Nadine's ears swiveled, and she looked behind her, noticing Nita watching her. "Pop the question!" Nita repeated. Nadine couldn't hear her, but she could read lips, and knew what Nita was telling her.
Swallowing her fear, Nadine asked in a quickened voice, "Kenai, will you marry me?!" She closed her eyes, and quickly turned away, as though the boar before her was going to slap her across the cheek for asking the question. But nothing like that came. Instead, she felt two furry arms pulling her into an embrace.
"Oh, Nadine, of course I will!" He said happily, and licked her cheek. Nadine blushed, and giggled like a happy little girl. She could see Nita looking at her and gave her a thumbs up, well the best thumbs up she could now that she was a bear.
"Way to go, Nadine." Nita whispered.
Koda moaned. "Kenai's getting married again? Already?" Nita ruffled his fur.
"Don't be a grouch Koda." Nita gently warned him. "After all, Nadine is your big sister now." She grinned.
"Yeah I know." Koda said. "I was happier when it was just Kenai and I, but I can't change Kenai's mind. I'll just have to learn to cope."
Nita pulled him into a bear hug. "That's a good little cub. Now go tell all the cubs what I had told you about the surprise." She winked at him. Koda grinned. At least there was one thing he liked that came out of this. Koda loved parties, and he was eager to organize something with the cubs.
Nita then turned and walked over to Tug. The huge bear lowered his massive head down to let Nita whisper something into his ear. He smiled happily and went to tell the other bears it was now time.
Nadine licked Kenai's cheek. "I'm so happy. I don't know why I didn't ask you earlier. Why if it wasn't for Nita's encouragement, I..."
As if on cue, Nita strolled up towards the new couple. "Hey, Kenai, Nadine. Come with me."
Kenai tilted his head. "Why, Nita? Did something happen?"
Nita smirked. "Sort of. Come on, follow me." Nita led the two bears towards the middle of the Salmon Run, where the waterfall and deepest water was located. There was no bear there, which was strange, considering there were still salmon in the waters. But it was night, so maybe most of the bears had gone to sleep in nearby caves.
Nita led him to the part of the river bank where there were plenty of huge rocks behind them. "We're here!" She said happily. Nadine and Kenai looked unimpressed. If Nita was showing them something special, they could not see it.
"What was the purpose of taking us here?" Nadine asked.
"Yeah, we've been here before." Kenai said.
"Wait a little longer." The cinnamon bear responded. "You will love this." She winked at the couple before waving her paw in the air, confusing with bears.
Suddenly, from behind the rocks behind them, many bears popped out, and shouted, "SURPRISE!!!" Kenai and Nadine turned around, almost having heart attacks from the sudden shouts. The bears came barrelling down, all talking at once. They were all congratulating the new couple and wishing them luck in the future. A few bears offered gifts, such as fish, special rocks, and herbs.
Nita had also offered a gift. She handed Nadine a necklace she had made herself, and placed it around her neck. The necklace was made off colorful rocks she found on the river bed and tied them together with string she found in a bear trap she had dismantled. Nadine looked at the necklace and smiled. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." She looked at Kenai. "And don't think I forgot about you." She pulled out a duplicate necklace and placed it around his neck.
Kenai chuckled, feeling embarrassed about wearing a necklace, but he thanked Nita nevertheless.
Nita and Tug escorted the two bears towards the same rock where Nita and Kenai had been married only weeks prior to this day. Kenai felt nervous about being here again, but Nadine couldn't be happier. On both sides of the river stood all the bears that Kenai had met at the Salmon Run. The bears were all smiling. Some were waving and others were winking as Kenai and Nadine sat down next to each other on the rock.
Tug walked across the river, and stood on the front of the rock, and cleared his throat. As he began making the speech, Nadine looked at Kenai. She was beginning to feel nervous, but she could not get cold feet now, not when she had gotten this far! Kenai looked nervous too, but was brave, and did not show it. But in reality his heart was pounding in his chest.
Nita watched them, and silently prayed Nadine wouldn't run away this time. Koda sat next to her, and looked up. "You think they'll go through with it?"
"Kid, I know they'll go through with it." But the cinnamon bear was also worried if something would go wrong.
Tug was beginning to finish up his speech. Now he was going to ask them the big question that would change their fates forever. "Kenai, do you promise to take care of Nadine, through sickness and health, till the day you die?"
Kenai blushed slightly, unnoticed, as he looked at Nadine. "I promise."
Tug turned to Nadine. "And you..Nadine? Do you promise?"
"Yes." Nadine said quickly, blushing like mad. This time they could see a slight discoloration in her fur.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now lick the bride!" Tug said cheerfully. Kenai and Nadine embraced each other, and licked each other's cheeks. All around them the bears were cheering and clapping.
During the remainder of the night, Nadine and Kenai were treated to a great party that Nita had planned out for them. There was plenty of fish and berries for everyone. Nita had even caught a small caribou just for the new couple. As Nadine and Kenai shared the caribou together, Koda, Kimba, and the other cubs put on a show for them. The story was depicting Kenai's story, how he became Koda's brother, but Koda was careful not to depict the transformation sequence. Nita had reminded him of that, and made sure he did not tell any of the cubs or other bears.
Close to the end of the party, Nita announced it was time to dance. Luckily for her, the bears at the Salmon Run had their own form of dancing, so no suspicion had arisen. Nita danced with one of the male bears among other dancing bears. In the center of it all was Nadine and Kenai. Nadine placed her head on Kenai's chest, and he smiled broadly.
When the party was over, it was dawn. The bears were exhausted and were sleeping, scattered all over the Salmon Run. Nadine and Kenai were cuddled together, away from the other bears. They had not gone to sleep yet. Nadine looked up at the morning sky, and whispered, "I love you, Kenai."
Kenai chuckled. "I love you too, Nadine."
The new couple fell asleep next to each other. Watching them was Nita. Nita smiled happily. "Congratulations you two." She whispered without stirring them. "I hope you two will be happy together." She turned and walked away, and laid down next to Koda. She too fell asleep.
