"Friends?..." Jasper was honestly a little surprised that Ken'ichi took his apology so quickly. Pleasantly surprised.
"Well, of course! I'll be your friend, Keni!" He grabbed the little black cub off his feet to pull him into a noogie... but thought better of it just half a second later. Ken'ichi doesn't seem like a noogie sort of bear. He set him down with a gentler open-paw rub on the head and a broad smile.
"Yeah, that seems like how it should work."

Well...how about that. Kenai thinks he'd hardly be surprised to see a mammoth flying beyond the trees, after what he's just witnessed. He can't help but smile.
"That's one way to do it, anyway," he adds, thinking of how he met Koda. "Sometimes they just sort of...find you. You don't know how it happened, but you just look around and...you've got a friend." He fidgets self-consciously, embarrassed by his own words. Reaching to scratch his neck, his paw comes to rest on his totem, and he looks a little less uncertain. "It...sounds a little corny, but...I don't know how else to explain it."

Ken'ichi got a little surprised as Jasper swept him up, only to be set down again with a gentle rub on his head. Rather than put on an annoyed or angry face he kept a simple slight frown as he toyed with a strand of fur hanging over his eyes, listening to Kenai's rather corny words about friends.
Friends, huh? The cub thought to himself. I never really thought about it. Do I actually have any friends? Hmmm...I guess these guys are, if I have the concept right.
"Um, sure." The small bear simply added, still not fully understanding the whole concept. But can you blame him? So sheltered and distant from everything and anything. "So the other two cubs...Are they friends too?"

"...cubs?" Jasper felt like he'd been woken from a daydream. Aren't they right here with the rest of us?
The big bear looked over his left shoulder, over his right... between his legs...
"Hmm. Where are the cubs?"

"Oh! The cubs...we left them just a little ways upriver. Yeah, we should...probably...check on them..." Kenai glances guiltily up the riverbank. He doesn't think Koda could get in much trouble here, surrounded by responsible adults, but...kids will find a way.
"If you come with us you can find out," he replies to Ken'ichi. "I can't speak for Dash, but I guarantee Koda will be your friend -- if you want, that is."

"There now, see? We can be friends and forgive each others mistakes. Now let's move on and find the other cubs. Let's make sure they're okay."
Truttle hoped that Ken'ichi would agree to come back with them.

"I...Guess it wouldn't be...So bad..." Ken'ichi replied shyly to Kenai's last comment. Having a friend...He never had one before, but he can guess it's a good thing to have.
He looked at Truttle and gave a hesitant nod to his gesture to go back to the cubs. "Ummm, sure..."
Maybe he can trust these bears after all. He's still surprised they still haven't made fun of him about his inability to swim, or gotten back at him after his bitter attitude toward them in the beginning. Are they this forgiving? Or was the cub too biased against the thought that made him believe it was impossible for other bears to be this nice.
Maybe the world isn't as bad as I thought... was Ken'ichi's thoughts after seeing at how...Well, nice these bears are.

"AHHHHHHHH! IT'S GONNA GET ME!"
Koda comes racing into view, a flurry of brown and green. He jumps up and down and runs around in circles frantically around everyone with something that looks like a tree branch stuck on top of his back.
"HELP! GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF!"

Kenai has barely taken two steps when Koda's scream reaches his ears, causing him to freeze in midstep with a short yelp. By the time he's able to process the odd sight and realize what has happened, Koda has already completed a couple of laps around the four of them.
Though his heart is still pounding from the shock, Kenai can't help but chuckle at Koda's predicament; anyway, he's just glad that it's not something more serious. He sticks out a paw as Koda comes back around and carefully swipes at the branch to dislodge it.
"I don't know what you were doing, but I think the tree won."

"Tree?"
As he feels whatever was attacking him get knocked off, he jumps atop Kenai's back, panting heavily, and peers over his shoulder to find that it was, in fact, only a tree branch.
He blushes furiously and pins his ears back, burying himself behind Kenai's fat head so that he can't see the faces of the other bears' reaction to his blunder.

A suddenly blur of brown fur caught the bears by surprise as Koda had ran circles around them.
“Heheh! Well hey there Koda! What do we have here?”
Truttle pawed at the tree branch that had frightened Koda.
“Why, this must be a good luck charm! It helped guide you to find where we were. So it must be lucky right?”
He picked it up and placed it over his back like Koda had it.
“This’ll come in handy! I bet it looks cool on me like it did on Koda! How awesome!”
He then began marching proudly with the branch on his back, displaying it for all to see. Wanting to make Koda smile.

The young cub, eyebrow raised, watched as Koda ran around in a panic because of a...branch on his back?
Must...Resist...Insults... Honestly, who freaks out over having a branch on his back? What was he thinking it was? This is supposed to be my friend?
Ken'ichi still doesn't fully grasp the friendship concept.
"A...Branch...?" Ken'ichi bit his lower lip to resist in making a comment as the biggest bear in the group marched about with the branch on his back. He looked up at Koda, who's still on top of Kenai's back, and questioned how he even got such a branch on his back, or how he got scared of such a silly thing.
Once again, he resisted the urge of saying something, for once.

With Koda on his back, Kenai makes an effort to keep from laughing; Truttle's antics with the branch aren't exactly helping him maintain his composure, so he turns his attention on Ken'ichi, the least amusing of the bunch. Seeing that the cub seems to be biting back some remark, Kenai is fairly impressed by his restraint. He can't help but smile at this small sign of progress.
"So, Koda, we were just about to come back for you and -- hey, where's Dash?" He desperately wants to say, Did the tree get him, too? but, with considerable effort, he holds his tongue. If Ken'ichi can do it...

Koda giggles slightly at Truttle as he parades around with the tree branch, unaware of the dilemma that Keni'chi is going through; He barely catches what Kenai has said to him.
"Oh, um... Yeah, I dunno where Dash went." Koda scratches his head and looks around for a second. "He was right beside me, then we kinda just ran off in different directions... I'm sure he'll be back soon enough though."
After brushing off the subject of Dash, Koda almost immediately peeks his head out from behind Kenai to look over at the new bear cub.
"Are you okay? I saw what happened back there. Man you were really flailing around and stuff! I've never done that before. I saw Kenai do it once, though; it was really funny! Almost as funny as that one time he was trying to catch fish... Hey, maybe he can do it again! Can you do the whole fishing thing again Kenai?! Pleeease?"
Koda pauses to catch his breath after saying everything as fast as he can.

The young cub grumbled as he toyed with a strand of fur hanging over his head. Yeah yeah, he fails at swimming, and apparently everyone on the river saw his pitiful attempt at not drowning.
Yeah yeah, don't remind me... Ken'ichi was very close to tell him off, but felt somewhat relieved that he derailed it to letting everyone know Kenai must've been through the experience once...Until he begged his brother to go back fishing, just to see his brother try.
I've had enough fish for one day. He wanted to say, just so he wouldn't go near the water again. He doesn't dare to go near it again, he doesn't care if he has to resort only eating food from land, to never again taste that tasty fish hide.
But of course, what kind of bear would that be? Certainly not a whole grizzly.
