I've been thinking of this for a long time.
But, I always forgot to post when I got online.
Okay. We know they are brothers with the same parent. The same mom. The same dad.
But, how come they got different totems? Totem can mean the animal side of someone.
So, it means they are bear, wolf, and eagle who were born from the same mom and dad? Their mom gave birth to 3 different species? O.o

Well the totem ceremony is more of a coming of age thing. Usually based on their personalities, achievements and goals. Of course there seems to be a spiritual touch involved as well. We simply don't understand it and neither do much of the villagers . Only the shaman can seems to be able to discover what totem a person gets. The totems are kinda like the medals a solder gets in the army I guess.

That is a very good question 21aLfOx I have wondered about this myself.
They got different totems because of how they act,how they treat others and what things they have done in their lives up to that point. Its like what Truttle said, its a medal of sorts to them that they have done good and this is the paith you sound take next.

Yeah. I could agree they have different personalities and behavior.
But, don't you think it would be better if they got the same animal?
It doesn't have to be "Bear of Love" They could have made "Bear of Wisdom" or "Bear of Guidance".

I don't think so.See I thing if they all had the brother totem, then all would have to go through what Kenai did, getting changed into a bear and learning his lesson.
So I think that the people worked on it to make senses of what was going on and made a pretty good story out of it.

Each totem represent a trait that's best suited for the individual, a trait that would help them guide them through life into becoming a man. Even if you come from the same family the same thing that lead them to being an adult won't lead you to the same thing. We all have to find our own path that will lead us to said goal.
I don't know much on the mythology Brother Bear was based on, but every animal spirit symbolizes something, and their totem represents a certain animal that best matches the individual based on what said animal symbolizes.
