Name: Devonian
Species: Honeybee
Gender: Male (thus, a drone.)
Age: 23 in "bee years"--a little less than 1 month old in regular time, including larva and pupa stages.
Personality: Most of Devonian's actions are motivated by one of two emotions--fear or curiosity (see "Bio"). He is intensely interested in the world around him but also somewhat paranoid, and oddly critical. Even though, as a drone, he has no stinger, he still has the common, sharp bee personality and can occasionally be sarcastic. When he feels threatened, however, he can be quite cowardly.
Bio: Devonian, which can be shortened to Devon, was born of parthenogenesis in a normal honeybee hive and has lived there virtually uselessly for all of his short life. As a social insect, he is related to virtually every other bee in the hive, the other drones being his brothers and the workers his sisters, with the queen as his mother. Devonian is dissatisfied with his role in the hive and is acutely aware that he has very little time to live in other animals' terms. His desire to avoid death, whether immediate or long-drawn-out, influences many of his actions, as does his memory of a bear raid on the hive during which many of his sisters died in stinging the bear to protect the hive, and his knowledge of the implications of his role in the hive. For these reasons, Devonian has a very special interest in the mountain where the lights touch the earth...
Description: Devonian is a normal honeybee drone; he is slightly larger than a worker bee, with much larger wings that extend out past his brightly striped abdomen. His stripes are slightly darker than those of most honeybees. He also has the large eyes of a drone, which take up almost the entire head and allow him to see ultraviolet light. The right side of his thorax has a set of 5 tiny black marks on it, all connected at an apex, which look oddly like a human hand. Most animals consider it too small to notice.
