I'm also a Ratha fan; I've still only read the first book, but I look forward to getting the rest of the series now that they're back in print.
Your beast-tongue solution is interesting. So, to the Brother Bear animals, the herdbeasts and "witless" Un-Named would be speaking characters, while the Named would seem alien, like the humans, right? I like it. ^^
