It's a complicated process, really...It takes a while, for sure.. I did all these from scratch in MSpaints first, using palletes from copy-pasted images of the characters I'm trying to emot, and then the 'fun' part is making the different movemeants and such from copy pasting the image several times into a bumber of frames...Then once you've completed the whole emot sheet, you have to cut out each individual frame, name them respectfully in a seperate and small file, like for instance; k2cry1 k2cry2 k2cry3 ect... k2=koda cry= the emotion it represents the # on the right is the numbered frame... After a while of doing this, it gets easier... After getting all the frames done, then you have to get a good animation program, such as coffee cup fgif animator, and use it to animate the frames, along with using transparency on it. That way the white, green, grey, or whatever background from the original sheet won't show, and emot itself will be represented alone. Finally after making all the files animdted, you have to upload them to a server, for others to see. It's really not THAT hard, but it's hard tom explain...I'd have to get you to come over my house and sit down in front of my computer to show you thourally, not that I'd be able to, though. So, yea, that's my summary...again...

You thought that was hard. You should try UV-mapping to place textures on 3D objects. Remembering points in 3D Space, creating vertices, and skinning the splines, that takes skill. Then the Inverse Kinematics (IK) sometimes go over my head, which show how joints will bend when a character walks.
If I've lost anyone here, don't feel bad. It confuses me too.
