Name: Ketone Age: Twenty-one years old Gender: Male Species: Pacific thunderbird Scientific name: Argentavis magnificens tonui fulminis Name Origin: The name for a carbon with double bonds, including one to oxygen; for example, acetone Voice: John Denver Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQjwZZbZ504Bio: Sire of Turgor, Alkali, Ion and Ring-Of-Fire. Ketone met Caldera in a rainstorm when both were twelve, though it was a few years until they mated. Rearing four chicks to adulthood had drained him and made him loose the iron fillings in his wings. Personality: A quiet, aloof male. Rather gruff though and hard to deal with, not always as sympathetic as he should be. Description: Orange-red body, gold mask and patches on head and alula; crest shaped like a cockatiel's. Fire-red eyes. White mane from mask to shoulders. Golden tipped wings, dusk-colored feet. Sire: Acetone (Acetone is a ketone) Dame: Alkyne (a carbon with three bonds) Offspring: Ring-Of-Fire, Turgor (sons); Alkali, Ion (daughters)

Name: Vetulus. When his mate was killed, Vetulus went by the shortened form of his name, Vetus. Age: Eight years old Gender: Male Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreasName Origin: "Old" in Latin (the white marks contrasted so much with the black fur that it made him look old, even as a cub). Voice: Jim Cummings Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=78gdX-frodQ&feature=fvst (6:42) Bio: Vetus was born to low ranking parents, but his strength enabled him to rise the top with Aerugo, the mate he picked while still a low-ranking cat, at his side. The previous leader’s daughter, Nebula, grew increasingly jealous- after all, she was convinced that Vetus chose his mate primarily because of colors, but why chose a lowly blue-gray? The leader longed to have Vetus as her own mate, frankly, mainly to have the others care for her cubs. Knowing Vetus would never abandon his beloved mate, she mauled and killed Aerugo. Vetus fought and crippled the rival, but the pain didn’t die. The other females, though normally fearless and they respected him (though opinions ranged), tended to somewhat afraid of the Leo. The cave lion blames himself for his distraction and humans for distracting him. One day a lynx mother, even more ill-tempered than Vetus, tried to kill the current litter of cubs. Vetus struck and killed her, only later learning that the mother was killing them for her own cub. To show his good-will, Vetus adopted Sollew and grew to love her as his own daughter. She is forever safe from his claws. Traveling with EbonyPatriot’s pack while trying to stop Tazer and find his cubs (his sister-in-law currently leads in his absence; Argentum and Aurum are his nephews on his mate’s side and occasionally visit), Vetus most often hangs out with the other great cat, Savik. Although not romantically attracted to her, she reminds him much of his mate and, like her, can keep him better under control. Remembering how much she made him a better Leo and though he’d never admit, Vetus is glad to have Savik help him control his temper. She too, is forever safe from his claws. Personality: Vetus can be very gentle and kind-heartened. However, he's very proud and clever, with his ugly temper from his cubhood intact; he rarely shows that side. He is devoted to and will fight to death to defend those he loves; with everyone else is impatient and aloof, if not downright savage. Vetus is easily lonely, despite his gruffness, and not quite above humor; it was these traits, plus his dedication to those who considered his loved ones, to drew his mate to him. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Vetus, as a Leo, is the largest of his pride and has grown a heavy 'mane' around his neck flowing from the long hairs on his head and ruff. Very shaggy, with feathering on his legs and long tail. Powerful, steel blue claws and fire-orange eyes. Black with white on either side of his muzzle, ear tips and backs, tail tip, eyebrows, and jagged tornado-like shape on his chest with a streak up his throat. Huge paws, bristling white whiskers. Sire: Aquilus “dark-colored” in Latin (black with dull gray muzzle, ears, paws, tail tip) Dame: Cinefactus “cinder” in Latin (mahogany colored with black eyebrows, muzzle and tail tip, white on chest and tail tip) Sister: Talus Mate: Aerugo Offspring: Caveo (son) Leukos (daughter) Trivia: Vetus was originally made for the role-play "All Alone". Since Kia's character was a human, I thought a man-eating cave lion would make a good villain. Nikiski and the others liked the idea, so I decided to add him to Darkness. Originally, his back-story was that humans killed his mate and cubs; the trouble is, that back story’s too common. So I recently decided to rewrite it, as well explain why Vetus would be so eager to always be with Savik (Epesi's character). I got a good rival out of it too. Notes: Inspired by Ch. Lochinvar III. Lion-sized jaguar-like cats, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build, they exhibit behavior midway between a wolf and lion. The Leo, the largest male and the only one to usually grow a mane, is the dominant (although of course, his mate inevitably gets her way). Prides range from a single Leo pair to thirty cats, although 15-21 is average. Strict monogamists, in good time the lesser cats can breed; but most focus is on the Leo’s cubs. Rank is based on aggression, not bloodline. Despite their size, they tend focus on the large herds of caribou and musk-oxen. A large pride protects them from the smilodons (although that tends to be more an acquaintance- not quite friends but not usually rivals) and moreover, large rival predators. Dark coloring is recessive, while blue gray is dominant. Silver is heterozygous, while gold is epistatic. White is incomplete dominance carried on the X chromosome. When not fully expressed, white shows up on the areas that are paler anyway (around eyes, ears tips and back, underside, throat, muzzle patch and right before the tail tip). A black colored will dull, near gray; silver and blue-gray will be near white, gold will be corn colored, and white not show up at all. All have black muzzle patches and tail tip. There are two black, faint streaks above each eye, like an exclamation point without its final point. Males have darker, shaggier necks and larger ruffs and tail tips and larger; females have black tufts to their ears. Dominant to black and co-dominant to blue-gray is mahogany. The gold, when not fully expressed, shows up on cheeks, brows, tail, legs and neck.

Name: Talus Age: Eight years old Gender: Female Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreasName Origin: "Ankle" in Latin (the tan on her ankle contrasts with the rest of her coat) Voice: Zoe Caldwell Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=45AtWXOWvT8 (340) Bio: Vetus's litter-mate. Talus never cared for leadership and prefers to be a member of the pride. While Vetus was busy becoming leader, Talus feel in love with Nebula's brother and became his mate. Talus leads the pride in Vetus's absence. Personality: Sweet heated, dignified, very calm and feminine- and tough as nails. She's fiery and has no filter, but will say whatever comes to her mind. Fortunately, her calm nature helps her through. She leads as well as Vetus, but prefers to be left on her own. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Much sleeker than her brother, with smoother slightly shorter fur and no mane (males form a crest, females do not). Fur is mahogany colored with white on muzzle, tail and forepaws. Each ankle has gold fur, hence her name. Sire: Aquilus “dark-colored” (black with dull gray muzzle, ears, paws, tail tip) Dame: Cinefactus “cinder” (mahogany colored with black eyebrows, muzzle and tail tip, white on chest and tail tip) Brother: Vetus Trivia: Vetus's sister; I created her mainly to serve as the leader when Vetus is with the pack. Personality-wise, she's very much a Rosie the Riveter.

Name: Nebula (Nebulosus) Age: Eight years old Gender: Female Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreasName Origin: "Mist," "fog" in Latin Voice: Lauren Lane Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrGkZ4yTo4U (7:01 16:57 21:02) Bio: Nebula had quite enjoying the life of luxury afforded by her father’s rank. Though she knew about Vetus, they tended to not interact and felt neutral about the other. She frankly could care less when the then still low-ranking chose his mate. But before she had finalized her own decisions on which male to choose, Vetus was able to overthrow her sire. At once, he fascinated her. Despite her attempts to act aloof, she was disturbed by how her father had not been able to hold onto the pride long. Vetus started the trouble when he asked her to help fight off an attacking animal. She saw that Vetus was the only one able to help fight off the foe and indeed, was far more powerful than the other males in the pride. With that, Nebula knew she didn’t want the lower rank: she didn’t want to wait to eat (only the sick are able to eat before the leaders), she didn’t want to raise her cubs with only her mate’s help- she wanted everyone else to take of them. What’s more, she wanted to rule, as long as possible- and since only the strongest can be leader, only the strongest will do. Despite her contrary claims, Nebula does not like Vetus at all and indeed, if she got her way would abandon him after Vetus lost his place as leader. But well, there’s no reason for him to know that and besides, there would be many years- many litters (cubs are born in the spring) before that would happen. There was a problem though- Vetus, like all cave lions, planned to remain with his mate for life. Despite the fact that she, the equivalent of a sable-merle, was overlooked by a blue-gray! Her fury and jealousy only increased when the two had a litter of two cubs. That was one year’s litter she had missed- she would not wait any longer and miss any more litters. The blue-gray should not be having cubs sired by the strong Vetus with the pride to care for them- she should. One day, when Vetus was chasing off some villagers, Nebula saw her chance. She attacked Aerugo and killed her. She was trying to catch and kill the cubs when Vetus arrived back and attacked. Nebula was unable to woo or indeed, fight him and was badly hurt. In fact, he crippled her leg. Had Aurum and Argentum not arrived with the news that the cubs had lived, Vetus would have killed her then; in fact, he was biting through her throat when Aurum and Argentum arrived. Since then, Vetus and the pride have been trying to find the cubs as well as defeat Tazer. Nebula fled. Her fur grew back over scars for the most part, but she still carries the marks and her left hind leg is crippled, with the toes splayed. She’s recently decided to join Tazer and find Vetus. Should Vetus find her, he will kill her; Nebula actually has three strong feelings towards Vetus. On one hand, she’s furious and wants revenge for his rejection and attacks; on the other, she still has yet to find a better male and still wants him for her mate; and the other, she’s afraid of him- next time, he may well win. Personality: Nebula is sneaky, whiny and can’t be trusted- she’ll act like she’s doing it for any benefit but hers. She’s selfish and views the world as being against her. Nebula’s more spoiled than anything and doesn’t view her actions as being unjustified (although she would never stand having others do to her what she does). Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Mahogany fur is tipped with blue-gray fur. White fur on ears, eyes, paws and muzzle Sire: Canities “gray-hair” in Latin (Blue gray with white eyebrows, muzzle, tail and cheeks; throat and chest silver) Dame: Aesculus “the winter or Italian oak” in Latin (Mahogany colored with pale brown eyes, stomach, paws, ears and ruff) Trivia: The rival of Vetus, she proved interesting enough to make a full character. Nebula'll make an interesting comparison to Tazer. Notes: Inspired by a character from Albert Payson Terhune's The Runaway Bag, Barnaby

Name: Aurum Age: Three years old Gender: Male Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreas Name Origin: Latin for "gold" Voice: James Marsden Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJB1vuBnX4M&feature=related (04) Bio: One of the litter born to Aerugo's parents not long before Vetus became Leo. Argentum and Aurum are now adolescents that tend to hang out with their dominant brother-in-law. Both were hurt by their sister's death; Aurum responded by being even gruffer. Personality: Hyper, Aurum likes to act gruff, but he has a gentle, caring heart. Aurum cannot stand to be alone, and is somewhat selfish at times, despite his good heart. More mischievous than Argentum, although he tries to be better now. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Gold with white on muzzle, throat, paws and tail-tip Sire: Caurus “Northwest wind” in Latin (pale blue gray with gold brows and throat) Dame: Ebur “ivory” in Latin (white with pale gold muzzle and paws) Brother: Argentum Sister: Aerugo Trivia: Vetus's brother-in-law. Originally, Aurum and Argentum were both just unrelated members of Vetus's pride; but I wanted a reason for why Vetus puts up with them.

Name: Argentum Age: Three years old Gender: Male Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreasName Origin: Latin for "silver" Voice: Will Friedle Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFnaJ5XHlyY (115) Bio: One of the litter born to Aerugo's parents not long before Vetus became Leo. Argentum and Aurum are now adolescents that tend to hang out with their dominant brother-in-law. Both are hurt by their sister's death, making Argentum a bit more withdrawn. Personality: Mischievous, and a bit gruff and sullen. Despite how dignified he acts, he's not above playing tricks. Argentum's a bit sulky from time to time and loves to tease Aerugo. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Silver with white on muzzle, tail tip, throat and paws Sire: Caurus “Northwest wind” in Latin (pale blue gray with gold brows and throat) Dame: Ebur “ivory” in Latin (white with pale gold muzzle and paws) Brother: Aurum Sister: Aerugo Trivia: Vetus's brother-in-law. Name: Aerugo Age: Eight years old Gender: Female Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreasName Origin: Latin for "copper" Voice: April Winchell Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0wXQ4A_z-0 (356) Bio: Aerugo met Vetus when both were cubs. Both were low ranking cats and became fast friends. Aerugo was drawn to Vetus's rare kind nature, Vetus to her patience and fearlessness with him. Vetus always tried to be gentle with her, something he never did with the others. The two had their battles, but they could never leave the other and became mates long before Vetus was able to fight his way to leadership. Though Aerugo dearly loved Vetus, she wouldn’t hesitate to correct him when she felt he needed it. Vetus appreciated this and, in turn, helped her out with her fears. Aerugo suspected Nebula and was defending her cubs. She was able to stall Nebula until her cubs escaped, but was killed by the rival. Aerugo, now with the Great Spirit, guides her cubs from Nebula. Personality: A joker, Aerugo loves humor. She can be a bit nasty, but that's rare. She longs to be feminine and gentle, but as a knee-jerk will correct others without thinking about it when she feels they're harming others. Aerugo is quite supportive. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Pale blue gray with white on muzzle, tail-tip, throat and chest. Has gold on cheeks and legs Sire: Caurus “Northwest wind” in Latin (pale blue gray with gold brows and throat) Dame: Ebur “ivory” in Latin (white with pale gold muzzle and paws) Brothers: Argentum and Aurum Mate: Vetus Offspring: Leukos (daughter) Caveo (son) Trivia: Vetus's mate, originally pure white and named Albeo. Aerugo's always been Vetus's mate, picked before he became Leo, and killed defending her cubs. I decided to make her a common blue-gray (the standard cave lion coloring, with mahogany as a close second) so that Nebula would feel even more jealous. I like the idea of her being personality wise, a bit like Savik to explain why Vetus is always around her. I also like the idea of her currently guiding her cubs.

Name: Leucaspis; renames herself Leukos Age: Ten months old Gender: Female Species: Northern cave lion Scientific name: Panthera leo atrox boreasName Origin: Leucaspis from the Latin for "having white shields", Leukos from the Greek for "white" Voice: Jodi Benson Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pPUmv3U2XY (109) Bio: Vetus's second-born. She actually came off worse in the fight, but unlike Caveo, Leukos can mention it. Leukos had a happy life, hanging out with her uncle Aurum and playing with Caveo. She saw her mother killed by Nebula and helped her brother escape. The two currently roam, avoiding Nebula. Personality: Sweet-tempered, shy and quiet, Leukos is not above her temper tantrums and rash decisions. But she cares very deeply and will talk to anyone who listens. Leukos will distance herself from those that hurt and finds it hard to forgive. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Blue-gray fur with gold on ear tips and ruff, white on muzzle, throat and chest, paws and tail Sire: Vetus Dame: Aerugo Trivia: Vetus's daughter, originally gray and named Soleo. One of the effects of the re-writes was that I decided to let the cubs live- that is, until Nebula finds them.

Daily Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_RA6Q7J1ao&feature=related (351) Bio: Vetus's first cub, born in the same litter as Leukos. Caveo preferred to hang out with Argentum and race around. Like Leukos, he saw his mother killed and was nearly mauled by Nebula. Personality: Every bit as sweet-tempered as his sister, hyper but tends to be gruff. Caveo desperately wants to be loved but unlike his sister, feels he must be gruff and do things by himself. Unfortunately, Caveo has his sire's temper. Description: Lion-sized jaguar-like cat, midway between those cats with a jaguar jaws, neck and tail and a lion’s limbs and build. Blue gray, silver around eyes, throat, chest, stomach and tail. Gold on ruff, paws and eyebrows Sire: Vetus Dame: Aerugo Sister: Leukos Trivia: Vetus's son, originally black-furred and named Caveo. Name: Sollew Age: Ten months old Gender: Female Species: Canadian lynx Scientific name: Lynx canadensisName Origin: From the Seussical song "Solla Sollew"; from the Dr. Seuss book "I had Trouble getting to Solla Sollew" Voice: Russi Taylor Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_RRsjzqiW4&feature=related (715) Bio: Sollew’s sire was stubborn but patient and indeed, would have made a better parent but was killed before she was born. Her dame didn’t care much for cubs and was impatient with her and even her previous litters. Sollew's dame was killed by Vetus while trying to kill a litter of cubs. When Vetus discovered why, the Cave Lion decided to raise Sollew to keep peace between the Lynx and the Cave Lions, but he soon came to love her as his own daughter. For her part, Sollew still somewhat misses her mother and is mad at Vetus for killing her, but truth be told, Vetus cares for her far more than her mother ever did. Personality: A shy little lynx, always worried about being loved and easily embarrassed. She sees in Vetus much of what her father was like and is close to him. Sollew is fearless around him and doesn’t see any harm in him. Though she can be nasty from time to time, she’s good humored and loves to joke. She’s not terribly responsible and somewhat selfish, like her mother, but hopefully she’ll grow out of it by the time she’s ready to get her own mate. Description: Unusually, Sollew's soft furry pelt is pure silver, dappled with black spots. Her bobbed tail is ringed with ebon; her large ears are faintly striped with black stripes and tufted with coal-colored hairs. Snow marks her belly, splashes down the insides of her legs, her brows and her chin. Her paws are huge and tipped with white; her ruff is large and banded silver, white, and raven. Sollew's eyes are yellow-green. Sire: Ne'shke'we'tuk “lonely sound” in Potawatomi, goes by Solum (“solitary” in Latin) Dame: Nikopjarpok “walks on tip toe” in Inuit, goes by Ferus (“fierce” in Latin) Trivia: Vetus's adopted daughter, registered June 22, 2005; first role-played June 25, 2005. I always loved lynxes, hence my decision to add Sollew. Later, I added her to Darkness. She's a fun character that allows Vetus to show his soft side and embarrass her adoptive father at the same time. Sollew's fun to play. Notes: Lynx= Solitary cats, only joining up when needed. They’re smaller and feel much more serious than their relatives the bobcats. Those that live in Cave Lion territory take a Latin name (the Cave Lions use Latin names).

Name: Kocabprocyoncanicula; Kocab for short (formerly Equuleus) Age: Three years old Gender: Male Species: Storm-stalker Scientific name: Gulo gulo tempestasName Origin: From Kocab, in the constellation ursa major; Canicula in Sirius and Procyon in Canis Major Voice: Dan Green Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJRpMUocUD8 (02, 12, 1:20) Bio: Born to Dubhe and her mate, Atik- the leaders of the Tribe- Kocab, the first-born, nevertheless had to assume second-in-command after his twin sister, Merakstar. He has guided the Tribe at his sister's side for all of his short life and his kind has thrived; however, these recent events with BlackStar have aroused his McCarthy personality. He won't be able to beat her or Tazer; but they won't have an easy time dragging him down either... Personality: Second-in-command and quite powerful, although he can never be the leader. Rather like McCarthy, he enjoys publicly turning out the villains and sometimes blames the wrong animals, hence why Merakstar no longer listens to him. But he still is correct in identifying the foes. Kocab loves drama, and if, he weren’t so worried about their enemies, would enjoy nothing more than to joke around that, despite his normal McCarthy-like past-time, is actually more than thinking out loud than seeking to hurt. He’s excellent at reading emotions, but not so good at seeing behind those movies; not that he cares. Like Merakstar, he will kill if needed. Description: The span between the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail is six feet long, 36 inches at the shoulder, and one hundred and twenty pounds in weight. Like a Wolverine (and, indeed, like all Storm-stalkers), he has a heavy build, large head, small, rounded ears, and massive limbs. His snowy pelt is unusual for a Storm-stalker, for while he has no chest-mark, each of brows are colored silver, much like a wolverine. Tail and ears are tipped with ebon. Sire: Atik (Atik is a star in Perseus) Dame: Dubhe (Dubhe is a star in Ursa Major) Sisters: Merakstar and Menkib Trivia: I first created the storm-stalkers (as I put it then, "more copyright-friendly somewhat pacifist early snowstalkers"), ancestors of the wolverine-descendant snowstalkers (from The Future Is Wild) on May 17, 2005. Here they're a subspecies of wolverine living on Ellesmere Island (to serve as a nod to my first Balto fic, which takes place on Ellesmere Island). Kocab was based on McCarthy and makes a fun contrast to Merakstar. Notes: A larger subspecies of wolverine from Ellesmere Island and the ancestor of snow-stalkers; they themselves are descended from Matoaka, while wolverines are descended from Xotol. They are in alliance with the wolves and feed on the Peary’s caribou and musk-oxen. There is one larger pack, with leadership determined by blood and gender (only the slightly larger females can lead). Adults have elongated fangs. Most have blue eyes. Their fur is an interesting one. All storm-stalkers carry the genes for a dark coat; yet save for the ear-tips and tail tips (which can black) and the patches of silver (more common), are white. The white is epistatic gene that is controlled by the Great Spirits: an evil storm-stalker, in punishment, will have the white genes turned off. A storm-stalker that goes good will regain the white fur. Usually these last for the entire time of the coat, although the Spirits may intervene either way. Per their name, they love hunting in blizzards. Usually monogamous, the leader will allow breeding during good times among the lesser individuals. Young are raised together to protect them from the foxes, rebel wolves and musk-oxen, as well as the keep warm due to their thinner fur. Despite the fur and size, storm-stalkers can mate successfully with wolverines and produce fertile offspring.

Name: Merakstar Age: Three years old Gender: Female Species: Storm-stalker Scientific name: Gulo gulo tempestasName Origin: From the star Merak, which is found in the constellation Ursa Major. Voice: Kathy Najimy Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqWZe46EUSE&feature=related (518, 847) Bio: The leader by birth, Merakstar has lived through the same experiences as Kocab, helping her Tribe through all that the barren island of Ellesmere has thrown at her- but BlackStar is beyond her power. Her only hope lies with her brother and Tekkeitsertok. Personality: Leader of the storm-stalkers, she was actually born after Kocab but was able to surpass him. She’s stubborn and arrogant, but rather naïve. She means well and does care for the pack, but lets her rivalry with her brother get in the way of listening to him. Merakstar’s hot temper gets in the way of things, even jokes. She trusts BlackStar, being flattered by her name, and ignores Kocab; the fact that he was previously wrong about identifying a bad storm-stalker embarrassed her to this day. Description: The span between the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail is four and a half feet long, 28 inches at the shoulder, and ninety pounds in weight. Like a Wolverine (and, indeed, like all Storm-stalkers), she has a heavy build, large head, small, rounded ears, and massive limbs. Her snowy pelt, like Kocab’s, is unusual for a Storm-stalker, for she also bears no chest-mark, with silver stretching up from claw-root to her ankles and pasterns. Sire: Atik (Atik is a star in Perseus) Dame: Dubhe (Dubhe is a star in Ursa Major) Brother: Kocab Sister: Menkib Trivia: Kocab's sister. Night Bear's BlackStar was actually created first and I based Merakstar's design on her to signify how much BlackStar wanted her position- and what a threat she posed.

Name: Menkib Age: Five months old Gender: Female Species: Storm-stalker Scientific name: Gulo gulo tempestasName Origin: From the star Menkib, which is found in the constellation of Perseus Voice: Cheryl Chase Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_RA6Q7J1ao&feature=related (355) Bio: Born to Dubhe and Atik after the pair had retired leadership to the brother-and-sister team, she was orphaned at the age of ten weeks when her parents died killing the last grizzly of the island. Since then, she has lived with the other kits in communal Tribe Nursery, cared for by the other members as well as her siblings. Since, like wolves, it is a year before Storm-stalkers can be on their own, Menkib will be dependant on her siblings for many more months- assuming they aren’t killed by BlackStar, that is. Personality: Younger sister of Kocab and Merakstar. She’s pretty happy-go-lucky and lives in her own little world. She rarely pays attention and can’t really be trusted. Like Merakstar, she’s not too worried about dangers and frankly, is very spoiled. Description: The span between the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail is only 18 inches long, she is 14 inches at the shoulder, and a mere forty pounds in weight. Menkib has a gangly build, large, round-sloped head, small, rounded ears, and oversized limbs. Her snowy pelt is, like her siblings, unusual for a Storm-stalker for her ear and tail tips are black and her shoulder blades blaze with silver. Sire: Atik (Atik is a star in Perseus) Dame: Dubhe (Dubhe is a star in Ursa Major) Brother: Kocab Sister: Merakstar Trivia: Kocab and Merakstar's little sister, originally given to help me segue into Night Bear's posts. She's a fun contrast to Sollew, spoiled and happy-go-lucky.

Name: Kojak Age: Twenty-eight months old Gender: Male Species: Snowy owl Scientific name: Nyctea Scandiaca [I've also seen it given as Bubo scandiaca] Name Origin: From a wolf at a sanctuary I went to once; the original wolf was probably named after the T.V. cop Kojak. Voice: Julian Rebolledo Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTDgRdsmFhM (start, 03, 34) www.youtube.com/watch?v=AddssO999bU&feature=related (:45) (627) Bio: When Tupatitsiyok and her brother Specter were young owlets when a yearling grizzly killed their parents and crippled Tupatitisiyok. Fortunately, Somnio's sire and dame chased off the yearling. The two's owner took the owls back and hand-raised them. Tupatitsiyok stayed with the humans and eventually mated with a wild owl on a return trip, the owl Kakortok. She and Kakortok raised Kojak and Nyctea among humans, but the two escaped chicks escaped while fleeing. Fortunately, Kakortok's lessons served the two siblings well as they wander the land trying to find their way back, not quite ready to find mates among the wild owls yet. Kojak is eager to return home, while Nyctea is consider finding a mate among the wild owls. Personality: The result of a mating between a human-raised owl and a wild one, Kojak is quite the spitfire- the slightest thing can set him off. There is a touch of gentleness and humor to the owl, and indeed, when unprovoked he can be acceptable. He is rather clever and blunt; even when he’s not using his talons, his gruff tongue is sure to be going and teasing (No, this owl has no filter). Despite his aggression, he knows when to turn it off and will rarely fight past making his point. When Kojak is friends with someone, he rivals even his sister Nyctea in his protection of them. Description: Unusual for a Snowy Owl, Kojak is pure foamy white (most males have black bands on their wings and tail). His eyes are gold. Kojak's wingspan is 65 inches from tip to tip, and he's 24 inches long body-wise. Sire: Kakortok
(Quartz) "white" in Inuit Dame: Tupatitsiyok "awakes" in Inuit Sister: Nyctea Trivia: Kojak and Nyctea came from a later Balto fic with Tyonek. Their mother is actually Hedwig from the Harry Potter series, hence the name. (Er, for those of you who aren't Harry Potter nerds like me ^^", J.K. Rowling commented that it was only after she wrote the books that she realized snowy owls aren't nocturnal. She then said that Hedwig's nocturnal travels could be either considered her character or Rowling's goof ^^'). It always was that their sire was a wild owl. I decided to rewrite the story so that while both the Balto and Brother stories can and do still apply, it can still fit in with the Brother Bear stories. Kojak was actually the first character I role-played- it was just an IM with my friend. Notes: Solitary birds preferring to keep to their own problems and mates; their stand-offish nature, however, cannot resist helping those in need. They feed on lemmings.

Name: Nyctea Age: Twenty-eight months old Gender: Female Species: Snowy owl Scientific name: Nyctea Scandiaca [I've also seen it given as Bubo scandiaca] Name Origin: From the genus for the snowy owl Voice: Tress McNeille Voice sample: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOFyYsb3dd0 (142, 155) Bio: When Tupatitsiyok and her brother Specter were young owlets when a yearling grizzly killed their parents and crippled Tupatitisiyok. Fortunately, Kakortok's lessons served the two siblings well as they wander the land trying to find their way back, not quite ready to find mates among the wild owls yet. Nyctea is torn between wanting to go back and wanting to stay and find a mate. Personality: Kojak’s full sister. She’s gentle and kind with others, although once you get her going she’s as bad as Kojak. She’s rather bossy, nosy and stubborn, but not above some humor. Nyctea is always bossing Kojak around and snaps at him for no reason. Nyctea tries to patient, but only to a point and lets the temperament she shares with Kojak flare, even when it would be better to remain clam. She’s quite clever and playful. Description: Nyctea's wingspan is the same as Kojak, although at twenty-five inches she is slightly longer; she's also robust like most female raptors. Her eyes are amber-gold. Her feathers are completely barred with the blacks of a female; although her face and throat are the same blazing foam color as Kojak's body. Sire: Kakortok

Nyctea was originally going to be called Ivory; I eventually picked the more interesting name. It always was that their sire was a wild owl.
